Hair Transplant
Redistribution of follicles from resistant areas to areas with hair loss. A procedure that requires planning and does not replace treating the cause of the hair loss.
How it works
A hair transplant consists of extracting follicles from a donor area, usually the back and sides of the scalp, and implanting them in thinning areas.
Follicles from that donor area are genetically resistant to the hormonal action that causes androgenetic alopecia. That is why, once transplanted, they tend to stay.
Prior assessment
Not every case is suitable. The assessment determines the cause of the hair loss, the density and quality of the donor area, the pattern of loss and its stability.
When hair loss is still active and rapid, transplanting without first stabilising it can lead to an unsatisfactory result in the medium term: the transplanted hair stays, but the surrounding native hair keeps falling, creating unevenness. It is a conversation we have before, not after.
The procedure and recovery
It is done under local anaesthetic, over several hours depending on the number of follicles. In the following days there are scabs at the implantation points, which clear in about one to two weeks.
There is one phase worth anticipating: at around two to four weeks, the transplanted hairs fall out. This is expected and part of the cycle. The follicle remains and produces hair again a few months later.
Results timeline
Growth starts at around three to four months. The result becomes evident at eight or nine months and is considered final at around twelve to eighteen months.
It is a slow process that requires patience. Judging the result before twelve months almost always leads to hasty conclusions.
Frequently asked questions
Does transplanted hair fall out?
It falls out in the first few weeks, the expected initial shedding phase. Then it grows back from the same follicle, which remains implanted and functional.
Do I need to continue medical treatment afterwards?
In most cases of androgenetic alopecia, yes. A transplant restores hair in the treated areas, but does not stop hair loss from progressing in the remaining native hair.
Can it be done on the eyebrows?
Yes, with the same technique adapted. It requires particular attention to the angle and direction of implantation, which determine how natural the result looks.
