Rosacea
Persistent facial redness that is neither sensitivity nor acne. Rosacea has its own treatment, and telling it apart is the first step.
How it shows up
It usually starts with episodes of easy, disproportionate facial flushing, triggered by heat, alcohol, spicy food or emotion. Over time, the redness becomes persistent in the central part of the face.
It can progress to visible blood vessels, inflammatory lesions that look like spots but without blackheads, and a burning or tight sensation. In some cases it affects the eyes.
Not to be confused with acne
Rosacea was long called acne rosacea, which caused confusion. They are different conditions: rosacea has no comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), and several treatments that work for acne make rosacea worse.
That is why the right diagnosis changes the outcome. It is not unusual to see people who spent months treating acne that turned out to be rosacea.
Treatment and aggravating factors
Treatment combines topical or oral therapy with identifying and managing the individual factors that trigger episodes.
- Specific topical anti inflammatory treatment
- Oral antibiotic at an anti inflammatory dose, in selected cases
- A simplified skincare routine, free of irritating or exfoliating products
- Daily sun protection, as sunlight is a major aggravating factor
- Identifying personal triggers, which vary a lot from person to person
Frequently asked questions
Can rosacea be cured?
It is a chronic condition that can be controlled. With proper treatment, redness and inflammatory lesions can be greatly reduced and flushing episodes spaced out.
Can I use my usual cosmetics?
Many common products make rosacea worse: exfoliants, alcohol based toners, some anti ageing actives. Simplifying your routine is often one of the most effective measures, and it is reviewed in consultation.
Can I have aesthetic treatments if I have rosacea?
Some, yes, with judgement and at the right time. Others are not advised during inflammatory phases. A prior assessment determines what is safe in your case.
