Botulinum Toxin
Botulinum toxin temporarily relaxes the muscles responsible for expression lines. Applied well, it softens without erasing the expression of your face.
What it is and how it works
Expression lines form through the repeated contraction of certain facial muscles. Over the years, that contraction leaves a permanent mark on the skin.
Botulinum toxin temporarily blocks the nerve signal that causes this contraction. The muscle relaxes, the skin stops being folded over and over, and the lines soften. The effect is greater on recent lines; on lines already deeply set at rest, it softens them but does not erase them.
Treated areas
- Forehead — horizontal lines.
- Glabella — the two vertical lines between the eyebrows.
- Eye contour — the so called crow's feet.
- Brow lift — a more open look.
- Upper lip and chin — perioral lines and chin dimpling.
How the session works
The application takes about 15 to 20 minutes. Beforehand, we assess your expression in movement. That is what determines the injection points and doses, and it is why the treatment cannot be standardised.
The needles are very fine and discomfort is minimal. You can return to normal activities the same day, avoiding intense exercise, extreme heat and lying down for the first few hours.
Results and duration
The effect starts to show after two to three days and peaks at around fourteen days. That is when we reassess and, if needed, fine tune.
It usually lasts between three and six months, depending on metabolism, muscle strength and the area treated. With regular treatments, the interval tends to get longer.
When it should not be done
Botulinum toxin is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in neuromuscular diseases such as myasthenia gravis, with an active infection in the area to be treated and with a known allergy to any of its components. These points are reviewed during the consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Will my face look expressionless?
No, if the dose is right. A frozen look comes from overdosing or injecting in the wrong points. The goal is to reduce the intensity of the contraction, not eliminate it. You should still be able to frown, just with less of a line.
Does it hurt?
The discomfort is mild and brief. We use some of the finest needles available. Most people describe the pricks as a momentary sensation, with no need for anaesthesia.
What happens if I stop?
The muscle gradually regains its function and the lines return to how they would naturally be. Having had treatment does not make them worse. That is a common myth.
Can I have botulinum toxin and filler in the same appointment?
Yes, it is common and often complementary: the toxin treats dynamic lines and the filler restores volume. The assessment in consultation determines whether both are justified and in which order.
