Acne and Scar Treatment
Acne is treated on two fronts: first control the active inflammation, then correct the marks. In that order, not the other way round.
Acne is not just for teenagers
A significant share of the cases we see are adult acne, especially in women over 25. It has its own features: inflammatory lesions along the jawline and chin, cyclical flare ups and a frequent link to hormonal factors.
It requires a different approach from teenage acne. Treating one as if it were the other is a common cause of failure.
Phase one: control the inflammation
Treatment depends on the type and severity of the lesions. It may include topical retinoids or antimicrobials, oral treatment when justified, and adjustments to your skincare routine and the cosmetics you use.
This phase requires patience. Visible improvement typically appears at eight to twelve weeks, and some treatments commonly cause a temporary initial flare. We explain this upfront so it does not become a reason to give up.
Phase two: treat the scars
Treating the marks only makes sense once the acne is under control. The options depend on the type of scar:
- Depressed scars — microneedling, in multi session protocols.
- Post inflammatory marks — the dark marks left after a lesion heals, treated with depigmenting agents and strict sun protection.
- Texture changes — chemical peels and biostimulation.
An honest note: acne scars improve substantially but rarely disappear completely. We prefer to be clear about this from the first consultation.
Frequently asked questions
Does diet affect acne?
There is evidence of a link with high glycaemic index diets and, in some studies, with dairy consumption. It is neither the sole cause nor the sole solution, but it can be a factor to adjust within a broader plan.
Can I squeeze my spots?
It is not recommended. Squeezing increases inflammation, prolongs healing and is one of the main causes of permanent marks. Extraction, when indicated, should be done in a clinical setting.
How long does treatment take?
Controlling active acne typically takes three to six months of consistent treatment. Treating scars comes afterwards and takes longer.
